the new issue of the new american city contains an interesting (yet extremely weak and rather late) analysis on gentrification in north portland and the "ASK AN URBAN HISTORIAN: American West" was conducted with my professor, the Carl Abbott.
although these two specific articles aren't available, the website is fo realz fun.

the following is my masters proposal topic summary. the rest of my school year will be spent on this topic. you are all now privy. Political & Civic Incorporation of Post-Soviets in Portland, Oregon: An Evaluation of The Project Interwoven Tapestry
“We have the same problems as other minority groups, but we don’t even have the luxury of knowing that, because we don’t have the (research) numbers to prove it,” (Wozniacka, The Oregonian, January 22, 2007). – Vadim Raskin, Russian community liaison for the Portland Public Schools. Portland, Oregon is a city renowned for civic engagement (Putnam, 2000; Ross & Levine, 2006) and lack of racial-ethnic heterogeneity (Gibson, 2007; Hume & Hardwick, 2005). However, over the past two decades Portland’s (PMSA) foreign-born population has grown significantly. One of the largest international migrant groups to resettle in the PMSA is the Post-Soviet population. Post-Soviet émigrés primarily made up of Ukrainian and Russian Evangelical Christians from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) continue to resettle in significant numbers in Portland, Oregon, largely because of extensive ethno-religious social networks between their communities in the FSU and the Pacific Northwest (Hardwick, 1993, 2006). Portland’s (PMSA) current Post-Soviet population is estimated to be over 80,000 (Hume & Hardwick, 2005). Ramakrishnan and Viramontes (2006) claim that resettled international migrants are less likely to engage in civic activities compared to the native-born causing disparities in local political processes and policy influence. Civic engagement not only provides political advantages for immigrants, but also assists in equitable social service provision (Ramakrishnan & Viramontes, 2006) and the likelihood for political incorporation (Bloemraad, 2006a, 2006b). Utilizing Bloemraad’s theoretical model of structured mobilization I propose an analysis of the political and civic incorporation of Post-Soviets in Portland, Oregon. According to Bloemraad (2006) the likelihood for foreign-born civic and political incorporation is largely shaped by government intervention (Bloemraad, 2005, 2006a, 2006b). The Project Interwoven Tapestry (part of the Building the New American Community Project) was one such government-initiated program implemented in Portland to develop leadership skills, build coalitions, and encourage civic engagement within the foreign-born population. Utilizing Bloemraad’s model of structured mobilization as a theoretical guide, I propose an evaluation of the Project Interwoven Tapestry by analyzing the Post-Soviet communities’ reactions and perceptions of the project and its overall effectiveness at fostering civic and political incorporation.

here's a little "push" to those who have NOT visited the amazing city that is portland: ->36 Hours in Portland, Ore.<-
other personal news: last quarter ended up being amazing and this quarter seems fine (not too much work). i'm doing two complimentary research papers on Russian immigration this quarter and i get to spend every thursday evening with my favorite Russian geographer. there were too many obstacles regarding my first attempt to establish a set program for next year so i've established a new program focusing on post-soviet immigration/refugee populations in Portland (which is huge), post-graduation (meaning in 3.5 quarters) will be spent in Russia or Belarus (my favorite Russian geographer pushes me everytime i see her), then who knows. planning my last year of school is bizarre since it is going so quickly; planning my future is even more bizarre but i'm taking the less stressful route, by allowing whatever sociological life choices to fall into place. also i will be in CHICAGO in JULY, it will most likely be my last time venturing east of the beloved cascade mountain range for some time, so please come visit while i'm there! in the meantime feel free to visit !! love.
